It\’s Official – Texas is about to take a step towards the Dark Ages

Well, that was fast. Texas Board of Education creationist Barbara Cargill today proposed an amendment to the science standards saying that teachers have to tell their students there are different estimates for the age of the Universe. This is not even a veiled attempt to attack the Big Bang model of the Universe, which clearly, and through multiple lines of evidence, indicates the Universe is 13.7 +/- 0.12 billion years old.

So Ms. Cargill is right, if she means that \”different estimates\” range from 13.58 to 13.82 (given one standard deviation) billion years old.

But she doesn’t mean that at all, does she? If you read her website, you’ll see she’s an out-and-out creationist. She has a large number of, um, factual errors on her site that are clearly right out of the Creationist Obscurational Handbook.

Anyway, her antiscience amendment passed 11 – 3.

So tomorrow that will go to the final vote on whether it will be added to the standards or not. With such a majority voting to pass it along, it looks like it will pass, and Texas students will get their chance to learn that the Universe is 6000 years old, and when they try to get a job or do anything later in life, they will be routinely laughed at.

That’s great, Texas! Keep on keepin’ on.

So I rescind my earlier post, and tentatively (until the final vote tomorrow)

This truly saddens me, I already checked the onion just to be sure it wasn\’t an onion article. But I knew better. Why are people so retarded? Give children a chance to learn. Once you kill science off it is only a matter of time before we are a 3rd world country.

“Politics, politics, politics, politics…..” – Comicus (points if u get the reference)

I do keep up with the election somewhat, but the thing that is puzzling me is not the people running (more of them later) but the voters and the people of this country.  I watch my friends on facebook join groups for one party or the other.  Now don’t get me wrong here, I am all for activism and all for taking a stand in what you believe in, but does no one see the blatantly obvious staring them in the face?

Generally, people will talk about politicians in a very bad light, they are all thieves, liars, just general all around bastards that you wouldn’t want living on your block.  There is an exception however, usually when we are talking about our local politicians (and by local I do not mean the mayor, i mean your congressman, senators etc) they tend to get a pass, its always the other guy that is slimy.

So here is the obvious thing…and here is what is annoying the living crap outta me here.  Both sides are boldfaced liars.  They will both do and say whatever they think will get them elected.  Period.  The problem is that you can not trust a thing that comes out of any of their mouths.  And yet…people listen to them and support them like they don’t know that they are being lied to on a daily basis.  My vote would instantly go to an honest guy or gal regardless of what they stood for because I would actually know what they meant.

Do I vote for McCain or Obama?  This is the first election that I really do not know who to vote for.  For the first time I really do not know.  Dirt on both sides comes out all the time and they try to dig at each other and push what they think is important even when its monumentally stupid.  Palin for instance talked about her foreign policy experience being governor (governess?) of Alaska and it being the closest state to Russia.  She forgot Canada as well, geography must not be her strong point.  But seriously, so the fuck what!! As Gov. of Alaska she didn’t really do anything that had to do with Russia, probably never even read a copy of Pravda (even the english edition).  OK OK maybe she organized the buying of some fish from some russian fisherman but that does not qualify as foreign policy experience.  Do not get my point wrong here, my problem is not her lack of foreign policy experience, few presidents had that, it is her saying that she has it when she doesn’t, of her pushing that on us like we are stupid enough to but it, and sadly….we seem to be.  Just one example of tons you can pick from.

It is a smart thing to tailer your words to an audience, you are taught that in public speaking, but there is a difference between that and just telling people what they want to hear.

So where do I stand?  What do I think you wonder as I sit here bitching?  I used to be a republican, but now I am far more of an independent.  My views depend on the topic, generally I tend to go with the republicans on financial issues, but lately even republicans dont even follow conservative economics.  <tangent>You want to fix the economy, enact the FairTax, plain and simple, do it right the fuck now to take effect Jan 1.  For those of you reading this, go harass your congressman about it.  </tangent>  I tend to be more liberal on social issues, I really could not give a fuck if u are straight, gay, black, white, pink, red, man, woman, lolcat, rich, poor, or whatever.  I consider myself a human and citizen of the world foremost.  I detest politicians playing to the lowest common denominator and detest the people who let it happen even more.  It annoys me that people talk about building a wall or fence and spending billions on it with the illusion that it will stop (or even slow for more than a couple months) illegal immigration.  I am not for illegal immigration, so don’t get that idea, I just want solutions that work, not ones that sound good in the press and get dumb rednecks up in arms patrolling the border.  FYI I am married to an immigrant, a legal one, who went through the whole pain in the ass process.  My wife’s english is better than mine (shes on facebook too you can add her, and my daughter is bi-lingual.  I am not that concerned about immigrants learning english well as it is a single generational problem, the kids learn english.

So the short version is even with all their talking (hmmm, the real cause of global warming?) no one really has any fucking clue as to what the people running really think and really want to do.  Based on that, how can anyone really made an informed decision?

I’ve been busy

Yahoo! Directory Listings

Yahoo! Directory Listings: ”
Ok everyone I couldn’t pass this one up. I was submitting one of my sites to yahoo and was looking through the options. This one was so amusing.

Yahoo! Directory Submit Cost
Yahoo! Directory Submit is part of a suite of services Yahoo! created to serve the needs of businesses like yours. Yahoo! Directory Submit provides expedited review of web sites you submit for possible inclusion in the Yahoo! Directory. We will respond to your request within 7 business days.

For web sites that do not feature adult content or services, the Yahoo! Directory Submit service costs US$299 (nonrefundable) for each Directory listing that is submitted. Furthermore, for each listing accepted into the Directory, there is a recurring annual fee of US$299 to maintain the listing in the Directory for the subsequent year.

For sites that include adult content or services, the nonrefundable initial fee is US$600 and the recurring annual fee is US$600. The higher cost for sites with adult content reflects the fact that Yahoo! directory team uses a more complex and time-intensive review process for sites offering adult content and/or services.”

So what seems to be being said here is that they get paid twice as much to sit there and review porn sites?!!!?! WTF? Or rather where do I apply?

Ben Stein Vs. Sputtering Atheists by L. Brent Bozell on – A Syndicate Of Talent

Ben Stein Vs. Sputtering Atheists by L. Brent Bozell on – A Syndicate Of Talent: “”

L Brent Bozell vs. Knowledge

You state that “Theirs is an ideology that preaches the freedom of thought and expression at every opportunity, yet practices absolute intolerance toward dissension.” referring to the ever so specific PC liberal media I guess.

Mr. Bozell, there is a difference between intolerance towards something serious and towards something ridiculous. If someone made a movie of the intolerance in the scientific community towards the green cheese moon theory that does not mean that valid views are being stifled. It means that most scientists won’t even waste their time to talk about it because we already know otherwise. Just stating that we believe the moon is made of green cheese does not make it so.

(more…) – Police: Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help – Local News | News Articles | National News | US News – Police: Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help – Local News | News Articles | National News | US News: “”

Ok everyone. I almost don’t know where to start here, which is semi-usual I guess since I mainly post things that outrage me. First read the article.

Let’s start with a quote shall we?
“The girl’s parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to “apparently they didn’t have enough faith,” the police chief said.

They believed the key to healing “was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray,” he said.

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.”

So many, many things wrong here. First, let me scream as a parent of a 5 yr old little girl here. YOU LET YOUR KID DIE?!?!! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU. The girl had been ill for about 30 days according to the article, even assuming u are right and prayer could save her (which it can’t), if you don’t have enough faith to save her take her to a Dr.

Then they apparently called more people to pray for her. These people who came and prayed and did not call for help should be charged as accessories.

The mother still believes the girl can be resurrected, right there is your proof of mental instability, which lead to the death of their daughter.

“The girl has three siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, the police chief said.

“They are still in the home,” he said. “There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see.”"

NO signs of abuse?!?!? Um, Ok, except the DEAD GIRL from their negligence.

But as I see on your website the police dept. there is pretty busy with it’s child safety seat inspections.

Sane people know that prayer does not solve problems, there is no proof of it, none, not one tiny bit. While I have a major problem with these mentally challenged people busy praying and letting their child die, right now I am having more of a problem with the police dept. You are supposed to protect people, especially children, protect the other 3 already.

I am going to email the police dept right now, there is a link to email them on their website.

Will there ever be enough evidence? : Paranormal Insight

Will there ever be enough evidence? : Paranormal Insight

Read the link above first.

While I might not say that there is no such thing as ghosts or the paranormal, i do think that it is pretty unlikely, but I am open to evidence. But what evidence is there? I have yet to see anything compelling. I do not wonder why they say this (which by the way seems to be the opening premise of your article that you never cover at all). Strongly believing that there is evidence does not make that evidence appear, my daughter believes in Santa Claus, and the evidence is in its favor for her, its mentioned on TV Shows, pictures of him are everywhere, and there are presents under the tree from him. And yet…there is no Santa. You can not prove a negative, if ghosts and other things do not exist then there is no way to disprove it, you can simply find the rational (notice that word, and look it up actually) explanation. Your house makes noises, it is more likely that there are ghosts doing it or some wood creaking?

You yourself state that you are open to evidence, and that you would have to see some things to believe them, but you also say that you would like to hear a scientific explanation of the experiences that people have. I do forget the exact place online, but I think it was on slashdot, about being able to induce these feelings in a lab with magnetic fields, I do know for sure that it is covered in the book Spook, science tackles the afterlife (i think thats the right subtitle).

Also, and I despair for humanity that this one isn’t so blindingly obvious that people just know it, we do not understand everything yet. Because there is no scientific explanation for something yet, does not mean, and i repeat this, this does not mean that there is not one. If you go before Newton, there was no scientific explanation for why we stayed on the earth, but that doesn’t mean that gravity did not exist then, we just did not know about it. We all want Nessie to exist too, but no one ever seems to find him, no sonar scans find him, the people who made the first big photo of him said they faked it, and showed how it was done. And yet people still believe in him. The guys who started the crop circles came out and showed how they did it, and yet, people still believe. We are still making progress into how the universe came into being, we know that the universe is 13.7 billion years old (thanks to the WMAP satellite), we know there was a Big Bang (or at least something very similar to how we understand it so far), yet lots of people still believe the world is 6000 years old. Doesn’t this tell you more about human stupidity and our desire to believe things than of reality?

The real question here is when there is a scientific explanation for one of the things you believe in and believe is paranormal, would you stop believing in it as being paranormal?

You talk about the show A Haunting, and state that you have a hard time believing in it, and so you should, so lets be obvious here. It is a TV show. Yes it is fair for them to make a mockery of unexplained phenomenon (notice that phrase), it is simply unexplained, that does not make it paranormal, supernatural, or anything weird.

Let’s try Occam’s Razor here. It is more likely that there is this universe wide (unless you think we humans are so special that the supernatural only applied to us) set of things that lies outside the laws of physics (not to mention common sense), or that a few nutters have some mental problems? Or if you feel something touch you isn’t that more likely something misfiring in your brain?

The real question is do you ever wonder why people believe so many stupid things.

MediaPost Publications – Microsoft/Yahoo Would Dominate Online Display, Rival Google In Search – 02/01/2008

MediaPost Publications – Microsoft/Yahoo Would Dominate Online Display, Rival Google In Search – 02/01/2008: “”

So what do I think about MS buying Yahoo? Well first lets check with the current reality, MS and Yahoo combined have about 3/5′s of the searches that Google does, so that would make them one bigger player rather than 2 smaller ones. MS alone has about 1/6th of Googles searches so this seems to be a blatant attempt to buy relevance in the online search and advertising market.

If I remember correctly, and a quick web search reminded me that I do ( ), MS bought another player in the online ad market last year.

As I do like Google, I would have to say I am pretty happy about this as MS has a great track record of screwing up. A lot of people like Yahoo, but how many of those will still like it as it becomes MSN?

The iPower Experience

Where to begin on this one. I am going to cover 2 separate pieces of my experiences with iPower, ( ). They are a web hosting company for those of you who do not know. We originally went with them due to price on a dedicated server. We have a bunch of domains and it was an easy way to put them all together. None of them are really high traffic.

We first got the dedicated server couple or 3 years ago. No real problems it seemed to work great. It was not a really high powered server as we did not really need one to start with. Then everything added up a little to much and it started to go down occasionally. The tech support was ok for dealing with this as it just needed a restart, within a couple hours or so, everything was back up and no problems. This started happening more and more, so we decided to pull one domain off it, a forum that probably averages about 30-40 users, so not a hugely busy one. We bought one individual domain hosting account for it, and after moving the rather large database, everything seemed good again for a while.

From here on out I am going to skip the minor problems and only hit the major ones. The first week in December, I see a $297 (exact amount for a reason) dollar charge on my debit card, no remember this is just after black friday, and I had just done all my christmas shopping, so my finances were pretty tight. The usual billing for them as $99 a month, it has been since we started with them. This was a rather nasty surprise, so I called their billing department. I did not write down the exact hold times over this next month, but none were shorter than halt an hour and I noticed one at 58 mins.
